So, we now have our gorgeous, final 30 curvy girls for this year’s Star in a Bra.
Now, it’s down to the public to decide which of these 30 girls should go through to the final 10 and be part of a glamorous makeover and photoshoot at a top London studio. After which, the voting will begin again to find this year’s Star in a Bra!
If you’re one of the final 30 girls, you need to start thinking about how you’re going to promote yourself during this round of voting. Lots of the girls have already started getting their friends to visit the Curvy Kate Facebook page to vote, helping them get one step closer to grabbing the Star in a Bra crown.
However, if you really, really want to start racking up the votes, you might need to go a little further than that. We would suggest setting up a Facebook fan page of your own, using the photos you provided in your Star in a Bra application, and inviting all your friends to read about why you entered the competition, and why you would like to win. Don’t forget to point them to the Facebook page where they can vote!
However, remember to try not to spam or pester people – as they’ll soon get a bit fed up of seeing you in your underwear and might not vote for you!
Above all, don’t just assume that the votes will come in – people need to know that you’re in the competition and you need to spread the word if you want to make it through!
Tell all of your friends… then maybe they will tell all of their friends! Mine were so helpful in campaigning for votes for me!
Remind people to vote.. but don’t pester! People tend to ignore things that pop up several times a day – make your “reminders” limited but powerful!
Firstly enjoy, appreciate and compliment each other (all our bodies are different but still beautiful in their ways!), pose like you’ve never posed before, don’t be scared if you find your suddenly self-conscious – it’s natural but everyone’s in the same boat so bring the confidence and show the world your fabulousness!! And last but not least be proud of what you’ve got and love every second of prancing about in your smalls!!
For the past four weeks, we’ve been scouring the UK for the next face and body of Curvy Kate! With over 700 curvy hopefuls entering this year’s Star in a Bra search, it’s needless to say the curve competition has been fierce!
Star in a Bra calls on all curvier women, regardless of size, height, age or colour! It’s amazing to see this represented by the wonderful women who entered the competition this year. Curvy Kate believe that curvy isn’t a size, it’s a shape and we’re trying to show diversity by loving and celebrating all curves!
Having said that, here are the names of our gorgeous top 30 girls…
Top 30 favourites
The top 10 girls will be revealed on 4th April and the winner will be announced on 2nd May! Eeek! Excited!!!
We’d like to say a MASSIVE congratulations to all the lovely ladies who entered this year, the judging panel had a difficult time trying to shortlist to just 30 girls. It’s not an easy task, to strip down to just your smalls and pose in front of a camera so well done! I hope it has boosted your body confidence and you’ve enjoyed being a part of Star in a Bra 2013!
Thank you once again to everyone who entered and a big hug to everyone who has spread the word about Star in a Bra 2013!
I followed the competition the year before I entered and I remember my dad not being keen on the idea of me doing it, so I was put off. The following year, I saw the competition being advertised again and I knew I definitely wanted to give it a go; so I rebelled, applied and it worked!!
How confident were you about your look/curves before the competition?
Honestly, before the competition, I always wished to be slimmer than what I was but I’ve always felt blessed in the chest department. The first few months of doing shoots and shows with Curvy Kate still felt quite alien and I admit that sometimes I felt a bit awkward at first. However it wasn’t long until I realised that I didn’t need to constantly feel like I had to improve myself; my self-confidence since winning SIAB in 2009 has come in leaps and bounds. A few years before, I used to wear braces and got into a bad habit of always smiling with my mouth closed, which never looks like a genuine smile. Curvy Kate is all about the big cheesy grin, so with a little encouragement and a LOT of laughs and jokes, I got my toothy grin back!
How did you feel after your win?
I was over the moon! After weeks (perhaps a couple of months!) of spamming my friends on Facebook to vote, and some of them spamming their own friends to vote, it all paid off. I really thought it could have been any of the girls that were in the Top 10. I did my first proper collection shoot the very next day so there wasn’t much time to calm down from the hype and get cracking with getting a real taste of modelling.
How do you feel now?
Still loving it! I have got to do so many things, travel to so many places since winning and I’m still working with Curvy Kate now so the fun hasn’t stopped yet. Whenever the annual competitions begin again, I love to follow its progress.
Has it changed you at all? If so how?
I think if it has changed anything, it has made me more confident in myself.
Has it changed how you view your body – if so how?
Definitely, before Star in a Bra, I always wanted to be unrealistically slimmer than what I was. A few months after winning the competition, I actually had a bit of an obsession with losing weight and started eating smaller meals, replacing some meals with protein shakes and going to the gym at least 5 times a week. I lost a lot of weight but didn’t really realise how much until my second Curvy Kate brochure shoot which was in the December. When it became apparent I could not even fill the cup of a 32F – my then size – I realised just how much I had lost and how obsessive I had been. Looking back at the pictures from that shoot, I see now that I looked unhealthy and underweight. I missed my curves and knew that without them, I wouldn’t be able to be a representative for Curvy Kate and what it stands for. 3 years on, I appreciate my curves even more and accept and embrace them as a part of being the woman I am supposed to be.
Which is your favourite part of your body – why?
Cliché as it may be, definitely my boobs!
Has this changed from before and after the competition?
No, this has always been the same. I have worn a light sports bra to bed every night since I was about 15, as I have found that with a lack of support at night I get a sore chest in the morning. I’m pretty sure that this has kept them perky too!
Have you ever found your body/look hard to deal
Going through puberty was strange, like most people I suppose. I always had the lovely “puppy fat” through my childhood so there’s always a tiny part of me that remembers being a little chubby. When I did “fill out” I remember having these awful pinky purple stretch marks all over my chest where I had developed quite quickly. When you’re a self-conscious teenage girl, the last thing you want is weird boobs!
Have you ever been criticised or bullied for how you look?
Thankfully, no. It’s one thing to feel unsure about yourself, it’s another thing to have other people criticise you.
What’s the best thing about being a curvy model?
I could list things all day! I always look forward to the next shoot, getting glammed up and posing for photos is amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to travel abroad with Curvy Kate several times, including a shoot in Ibiza and tradeshows in New York, Vegas and Paris! Free underwear from time to time is always a good thing too! The best thing though: being a part of the Curvy Kate family and getting to know the people who do all the hard work in the background of the amazing brochures and product.
What is the best thing anyone has said to you about modelling?
People saying that you have inspired them to enter the competition or even just made them feel better about their own bodies, is a great feeling.
Are you glad you entered?
It’s probably the best thing I ever did!
In an ideal world, yes. I did try it out about a year ago, flitting between my casual job as a swimming instructor and any work that would come up either through Curvy Kate or agencies. It was an amazing year of travelling and meeting new people, but reaching an age where I needed to start thinking about moving out and becoming more independent, I knew I could not earn what I needed to achieve that goal as I was not getting modelling work consistently enough. I now work as an Office Manager for an investments brokerage and my commitment to my job means modelling has taken a backseat. The good thing is, with enough notice in advance I can still take on some work and there is always the weekend!
Do you love your full time job?
I do, it’s nice to have something secure and a guaranteed income every month. I miss the freedom of being able to drop everything and jaunt off somewhere to do something glamorous but I still feel I have the best of both worlds as there are still opportunities for modelling work out there.
Is it nice having this on the side to do?
I am so glad I can continue to model on the side, it’s totally different from my every-day 9-to-5 so it feels less like work and more like a hobby. I also continue to teach swimming on Saturday mornings at my local leisure centre as I knew I would miss working with the kids and maintaining my teaching experiences. Variety is the spice of life!
What a beauty! Since entering the Star in a Bra competition, Lauren hasn’t looked back! As she mentioned, she has travelled with Curvy Kate for photoshoots and tradeshows, her curves have been truly celebrated in our brochures and even on the sites of many of our retailers! And if that’s not enough….how about a year’s supply of gorgeous Curvy Kate lingerie?!
With only 3 days left, you need to hurry to get your 5 photos in, so that’s 2 headshots and 3 full length shots of you in lingerie or swimwear! Get those curves camera ready!! *Snap…snap…snap*
Hi lovely readers!
Amidst all the fun and the thrills of the Star in a Bra 2013 launch, I found a lil’ time to catch up with our 2008 Star in a Bra finalist – Laura Butler! Fantastic for all you aspiring Curvy Kate models!
Why did you enter Star in a Bra?
I opened an email and saw the competition posted back in 2008 and I knew straight away that I had to enter. I had always, and still do, love the Wonderbra ‘Hello Boys’ advert with Eva Herzigova and dreamed of doing exactly what she was doing and I thought that this was my opportunity to do so, so I went for it. I acted on instinct which is me all over and it served me well.
How confident were you about your look/curves before the competition?
I have always appeared to be confident person. I danced from the age of 3 and when you are on stage confidence is a must so you learn to hide nerves well. I think for most of my life I faked confidence by being loud and out there and one day it turned to real confidence. I am not sure when the transition was but I am glad that it happened!
How did you feel after your win?
I never actually won. I came third! I was in the first ever ‘Star in a Bra’ competition and it was on a much smaller scale back then. I was in a clothes shop when I got the phone call from Hannah Houston, Curvy Kate’s Marketing Manager , telling me that I had come 3rd and I was over the moon. First, second or third I was just glad that I got to take part in a photo shoot for a magazine – to say I was excited is an understatement. It was so surreal and my family and friends were so proud. I didn’t think I would make it that far in all honesty so the fact people had voted was amazing but I just knew that this was the start of something fun!
How do you feel now?
Years later I feel like I have gained a lot of friends. Curvy Kate is like a family and when you come in as a model you get treated as part of that family. It is still a relative small company for its age and as I have been with them from the beginning I feel like a protective big sister! I work with them as I believe in their ethos so I am proud to be a part of that.
Has it changed you at all? If so how?
Working for Curvy Kate has definitely changed me. It has developed my skill set as I can now bra fit (which generally drives my friends and family crazy)! It has developed my confidence further, my people skills from working at trade shows, improved my body awareness from being on photo shoots and improved leadership skills as I help to train stores on Curvy Kate fitting and bra fitting. Personally, it has given me life experience and enriched my life. Not many people can say they have fulfilled a life dream and I have.
Has it changed how you view your body – if so how?
Becoming a lingerie model has definitely changed how I view my body. I am now perfectly happy with the way I look and no longer strive to change who I naturally am with dieting etc. Some people are big, some are small and some are in-between. I am that in-between person – not skinny yet not what people would call big. I have come to realise that ‘perfection’ doesn’t exist as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When you realise that you become content and that is what I am. It has taken years of reading people’s views of me to realise that – some people love the way you look and some people hate the way you look and that is just not me – it would be the same for everyone. The world would be boring if we all looked the same!
Which is your favourite part of your body – why?
I love my smile and teeth. People have different ideas on what perfection is but I think my teeth and smile are just that for me. It is a nightmare on photo shoots when they are ‘non-smiley’ though as I struggle with a ‘sexy’ look! Ha. I was just born to smile and I think it is when I look my best and happiest.
Has this changed from before and after the competition?
I hated my teeth when I was younger so I think this has developed since the competition!
Have you ever found your body/look hard to deal with?
Yes. I was flat chested up until I left senior school and then developed. I found it hard to deal with the change so quickly and still struggle to dress them. The only good thing is that I have the correct fitting lingerie…. That is half the battle!
Have you ever been criticised or bullied for how you look?
Never. But I think I have always seemed too confident and bullies generally bully those who are ‘weak’. I would never have given anyone a chance to bully me about my looks. I am far too outspoken!
Has this changed over the years?
No. I am who I am. I have just got more confident as I have got older. Plus I don’t think words would bother me either. As I said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
The photo-shoots, the laughs and giggles with the girls and ultimately the lingerie! It is so gorgeous and I get to see it before the public!
What is the best thing anyone has said to you about modelling?
That I helped them to overcome their body issues and gave them confidence!
Are you glad you entered?
110% yes. It is one of the best things I have ever done!
Would you like to model full time?
I don’t think I would. I work for Curvy Kate as I believe in their products, brand and ethos but if I worked full time I wouldn’t be able to just work for companies that I liked. I therefore love the fact I can be fussy!
Do you love your full time job?
I adore it… if I didn’t, I wouldn’t do it.
Is it nice having this on the side to do?
Of course. I like variety and it enriches my life. I wouldn’t be the same person without it and if I didn’t have it in my life I would feel lost.
It was so good catching up with Laura and getting her opinion and experience knowledge on Star in a Bra! I hope reading this has motivated you to flaunt those curves and it has also encouraged you to continue to love yourself in the skin you’re in! As Laura mentioned above, beauty is in the eye of the beholder – I couldn’t agree with her more!
If you didn’t catch our lovely Laura in the national and local papers, a couple weeks back, below are a few of the papers she appeared in! Go Miss Butler!!…..
Celebrate those curves today by entering our Star in a Bra model search! Enter here!
Eeek! Just a few more days to go before Star in a Bra 2013 opens! Who’s excited?!
Well if you’re thinking of entering the competition this year, I’ve got some first-hand knowledge from one of our top 10 finalists of 2012. I caught up with the beautiful Alice Rayman, here’s what she had to say…
1) What made you enter Star in a Bra 2012?
I started wearing Curvy Kate back in 2011, used to read all about SIAB (Star in a Bra) and all my friends and family kept pushing me to enter but I didn’t feel confident enough so kept putting it off! I kept tabs on Curvy Kate’s Facebook page and was constantly in awe of all the gorgeous, curvy ladies who were posting photos of themselves in their smalls and I just thought one day while I was sat there, “sod it! I can do this too!” I didn’t expect anything to come of it!
2) What was your best moment in the competition?
There were so many!! But probably fave moment was getting into the Top 10, doing the photo shoot and having such a laugh with the girls!!
3) Were there any cons to you entering the competition?
Can’t think of any cons, just pros! Free underwear and gifts!!.. But seriously, my body confidence has soared and I now view my ‘lumps and bumps’ completely differently. I feel so happy in myself! And I’ve been lucky enough to keep in contact with everyone at Curvy Kate and I still do the odd job for the brand, recently modelling in their first ever bloggers event alongside Sophie, Charlotte and Lizzie! Being a K cup has its perks!!
4) What advice would you give to the girls entering this year?
Don’t have any doubts and go for it!! Have fun taking the photos too – my sister helped me do mine and we had such a laugh! Every woman deserves to feel confident and sexy and posting photos of yourself in your underwear honestly gives you the biggest boost!!
5) Since SIAB, what have you been up to? We hear you’ve managed to snap up an impressive role in Calendar Girls, which is amazing I must say! How did Star in a Bra help grow your body confidence?
As I said, I’ve been very lucky since SIAB as I still do the odd bits and bobs for Curvy Kate and the team are so lovely to me, such a friendly and warm atmosphere – they all love my boobies! At the moment I’m playing Cora in an amateur production of Calendar Girls in Kingston! And yes, that does mean I get COMPLETELY starkers on stage in front of a load of strangers. But I honestly believe that if I hadn’t done SIAB I wouldn’t have had the guts to audition. SIAB gave me body confidence, and taught me to love my K cups and figure. Just because I’m bigger busted, doesn’t mean I can’t look and feel sexy in lingerie. I can’t believe that 2 years ago I was considering a reduction – I wouldn’t dream of losing these babies now!
The Star in a Bra 2013 competition is open for entries from 14th February 2013. To keep updated you can like the Curvy Kate Facebook page, follow us on Twitter or check out www.starinabra.com for more information.
(You can also check out what Alice thinks of Curvy Kate’s new Portia Seafoam bra as she video blogs about it here!)
Whilst we all love a good pampering and having our hair and make up done, the most important part of the Star in a Bra ‘makeovers’ is without a doubt the professional bra fitting. Whilst the girl’s submission photos all look incredible and got them picked for the top 30, as mentioned in our last post, some of them were indeed wearing the wrong bra size.
In a culture where a bra is seen as a fashion garment instead of a tool to support and hold you in place, it is so important to remember exactly what a bra is supposed to do and look like. We don’t see why the two should be mutually exclusive, and aim to seamlessly intertwine fit and fashion into our ranges. We want our fans to be fit aware, and believe the best place to start is by showing them – through our models – how a bra should look.
So which of our curvy champions was wearing the right size bra? Take a look at our before and afters… we’re sure you’ll see a difference!
We may be a little off the widely-reported statistic that 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, but with 70% of these lovelies now in their ‘correct’ size, let this be a warning to those of you who are still yet to get fitted by a reputable fitter! Just look how a perfect fit can change the way your boobs look, and trust me that’s not anything on how much better it feels!
Here they are with their new sizes and new photos! Have you seen our top 10 finalists yet? Who gets your vote?
After an amazing 12 weeks and without a doubt one of the best Star in a Bra competitions to date, we got in touch with our second and third runners up and some of our other finalists who, even though they didn’t win, still had a blast along the way. They may have been pipped to the post by our gorgeous Sophie, but they’re all winners in our book and are flying the flag for gorgeous, healthy curves everywhere!
Congratulations to all of our fabulous top 10, top 30 and all the girls who were confident in their own skin enough to enter, you’re all bra stars!
“I entered the competition initially as I’d had so much encouragement from the people around me to do it … I have to admit, I didn’t really believe I’d get anywhere … however, from the moment I found I’d made it into the final 30 until now I’ve just grown and grown in body confidence ! I would never have imagined feeling as comfortable as I do … friends, family, colleagues, all seeing me in my underwear … the feedback, comments and encouragement have taken away any negatives I might have thought or felt … My curves, shape and bust have definitely become my favourite assets … they’re not issues to tackle, they’re benefits to promote!”
“The professional photo shoot in London was a really fun day and all the Curvy Kate staff was brilliant at making us girls comfortable and confident. I was really surprised at how natural it all felt given I have never done anything like this before and being first up allowed me to then chill out and take in the day with everybody. I’m glad I took along my Ukulele as the Curvy Kate song was so much fun performing – I really didn’t know that you guys would love it so much ! Also props to the professional hair and make up artists as this was the first time I have experienced it.”
“The competition has given me a huge confidence boost and made me feel completely happy with my body and curves. I have never had huge body confidence issues but have felt fat and frumpy a few times over the years. I have also always felt I needed to watch what I ate and weigh myself a lot however I have always liked the size of my bust, just had trouble finding nice lingerie to fit! The competition has definitely blown away all my worries about watching what I eat and looking fat as I have realised that It doesn’t matter what size you are, you can still look flawless in underwear and ooze confidence.”
V******** *********, top 10 finalist:
“I’ve always struggled with body confidence issues, as I’m sure most people have. I’ve spent most of my life trying to diet and failed miserably. I’m 31, I’ve had children, between work and family, I don’t have time to go the gym or spend days at the spa and I love food. I think most women can really relate to that.
It’s funny because simply sending in my entry pictures was such a confidence boost; it feels almost freeing that you always keep your curves covered and now you’re taking pictures and sending them in for potentially the world to see.”
“The competition has truly done wonders for my confidence. Before I was always worrying about what I looked like and comparing myself to other girls of different shapes and body types and wondering why I couldn’t look like them. Now I’ve found I just don’t care! I’ve learnt to embrace my curves, and that I can’t change my body so I may as well make the best of it.
I’ve had plenty of well-wishers, and loads of women telling me how they think what I’m doing is fantastic and inspiring. It means so much to me that people are supported me and understood why I entered in the first place and what the competition represents.”
And that’s it for the UK for another year, here’s to finding our next curvy girl over the pond in America! The top 30 goes live on the USA Facebook page on Thursday, 10th May and we can’t wait to see what gorgeous curves the USA has to offer…
It’s the final voting stages so lets re-visit the photo-shoot and see what really happened behind the scenes of this year’s Star in a Bra. It’s hard enough trying to choose a girl from just a photo so hopefully this will give you a small idea of their personality and what each model really got up to behind their curvy figure and composed smile.
We asked each girl to come in wearing very little make-up and nothing that can mark their skin (i.e. belts or elasticated waist) this made it easier to send them straight into hair and make -up. The shoot was divided into two days of curve flaunting fun and food as each girl got to unveil their new look and pose for the camera.
For the first day we had Victoria, Harriet, Alice, Charlotte and Jessie.
For the second day we had Madeleine, Rachel, Abby, Sophie and Jade.
We also had last year’s Star in a Bra winner Lizzie Haines and curve loving blogger Becky Mount for both days… both eager to show off their Curvy Kate goodies too! 10 girls and two curvy fantantics equal a really fun two days, full of laughter and some even funnier shots!
Each and every girl came in with bags of confidence and excitement awaiting the days ahead. They were whisked away straight into hair and make-up to begin their transformation bringing them one step closer to flaunting those gorgeous figures ‘Curvy Kate Style’.
With Fletcher working on hair and Louisa on make up, these gorgeous girlies were well taken care of! Each bra star was asked what style of hair and make up they liked which was used as inspiration on their look… don’t they all look stunning! Who knew hair could go that big?
After they were all ‘dolls up’ and ready to for the spot light it was time to get them down to their smalls and fitted into their Curvy Kate sets! Most of the girls were re-fitted at the shoot leaving them not only with a memorable day but a new bra size too! Some were even astonished to find out they were three cup sizes bigger than they originally thought; going from a 36DD to 34FF. They each had four sets to model ranging from gorgeous everyday essentials, sexy showgirl and tantalising swimwear.
After every curvy goddess had their moment in front the camera, it was time to record them on video. Each model was asked a few questions like their reason’s for entering and why you should vote for them… Check out the video below for their answers and a sneak peak at what behind the scenes really look like.
The girls were later given their goodie bags full of a number a girlie items and a few random ones too… the girls we all so excited we had to get their reactions on camera! They all received a bag, chain and bag holder from Accessories Direct, chocolate hamper from Cadburys Direct, So…? Perfume from So…? Fragrance, Gucci Guilty Intense from The Perfume Shop, £50 worth in spa vouchers from Spa Breaks, a Jazz apple and apple cutter from Jazz Apples, a Curvy Kate set of their choice and a Best Magazine. Best will be covering the Star in a Bra competition this year with a special piece on this year’s winner!
After all the excitement of the photo shoot and the goodie bags, the girls were all on a high so the fun continued back stage with pillow fighting, splits, food, ukulele playing and of course some singing! By the end of the two days each girl had rock out in full Curvy Kate style adding the unique ingredient in all our models – FUN!
So now you’ve seen what they really got up to behind the scenes you can get a better idea of who you would like to win but choose wisely as you only get one vote this round. Good Luck to all ten girls you all are amazing and look stunning in your smalls!
To vote for your winner and see more images of the girls check out the Curvy Kate Facebook Page.
As most of you know (and if you don’t, you do now so get snapping!) our UK Star in a Bra competition closes today. It’s been another whirlwind of a competition with all previous entry records being smashed – we’re well on over a thousand entries now!
For those of you who still need a bit of persuasion, or for those of you who have entered and would like a bit more of an insight into what it’s like to be a Bra Star and what the job involves, we’ve put together a summary and some snaps for you! We hope you all enjoy and good luck!
Our shoots are a very fun place to be, relaxed and very loud. We usually start off with a big breakfast followed by hair and make up, followed by shooting, messing around and screaming. The other models are really lovely and friendly so it’s like a meet-up of friends!
Our girls get glammed up for the Autumn/Winter 2012 photo shoot
This is why we use our customers as models. Who needs professional pouters anyway?!
Trade Shows and Exhibitions:
This is our gorgeous winner from last year, Lizzie Haines. Yesterday she took part in a live Facebook chat with Best Magazine, and when asked what made her enter last year’s competition, she replied:
“Well….for me it was an act of defiance if I’m honest. After a life of love/hate for my body, reaching 30 really changed my perspective on things and I thought “yeah, I could do that!” and so I went for it. I never expected to win though!”
This year, Lizzie attended the UK lingerie trade show, Moda, where hundreds of brands display their wares from the upcoming season to their buyers. It’s quite a big responsibility to represent the brand, model the products gracefully and keep up our oh-so-important reputation.
Lizzie at Moda with our Sales Manager, Seema. Again, upholding that professional reputation I mentioned earlier…
Kidding aside, we’d like to think we’re a fun bunch who don’t take ourselves too seriously. Lizzie really speaks for and represents Curvy Kate so perfectly as she’s such a fun-loving, happy and spirited young madam who’s always up for a laugh. She’s a pleasure to work with and be around and we love her!
Moda and the other trade shows (in Paris, New York and Vegas to name but a few!) are an opportunity to show off our gorgeous collections to potential business partners but as a brand we’re fun and young-minded so that’s what we love to portray with our models!
Lizzie and resident Curvy Kate blogger Becky Mount can’t wait to get their hands on the new ‘Smoothie’ bra…
We love our models! Mwah!
Some of the Curvy Kate team at Moda
You’ll be required to work with these crazy people. I hope that concept alone doesn’t put you off...
As well as the Moda show in Birmingham we display at trade shows all over the World, from Paris to New York. Depending on availability we take a model to each show to flaunt our products and their curves to traders and the media!
We take a model each year to the Paris trade show Salon International
Working very hard in Paris…
Our model Lauren Colfer working equally as hard in New York, New York
But it’s not all play, sight-seeing and no work as our girls are required at the stand in the trade show…
…as Lauren demonstrates beautifully!
Media and Press:
Our models have been featured in various published media, from blogs to advertising, trade publications, magazines and newspapers (and many more!) so be prepared to see your face and body on the internet. You will be on search engines, in mags and so on. Lizzie Haines was even in the Daily Mail last year when she was crowned Plus Size Model of the Year – with her own feature which would have been viewed by thousands upon thousands of readers.
We’re so proud of our girls spreading the word about beautoful curves and body confidence
Lauren was featured in More! Magazine
If you think you’ve got what it takes to fill Lizzie’s boots, (or rather, fill her bra…) we want to see your pictures! Remember; if you haven’t entered yet you’ve got until midnight tonight to get your pictures uploaded.
Just remember and make sure:
• You have 5 images uploaded

On Tuesday we heard from the beautiful Georgina Horne about her year since Star In A Bra, and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say it was an inspiring read. It’s so amazing to see what the competition did for Georgina and despite the fact she didn’t win, she’s gone on to model elsewhere and now has a hugely successful blog which she’s so passionate about.
Today we have a brand new guest post from the last years runner-up, Emma D.
Emma came second in last years competition but still modelled in the spring/summer 2012 catalogue, and the majority of these products are available right now.
So without further ado, lets hear what Emma has to say about her experience…
“This time last year, two of my best friends were taking photographs of me in my underwear and plying me with wine. We had a legitimate reason of course – Star in a Bra 2011! And Here’s why I entered…
To say I developed early is an understatement. The first time I bought a bra with my mum I was only 11 and the best they could fit me with was a 32C. No lie.
From then on my love/hate relationship with my body varied. Throughout my teens I stubbornly insisted on wearing sizes too small (and I know I’m not alone in doing this!). This would result in tantrums and tears in the changing rooms. I would like to take this moment to say – ‘mum, I’m sorry. Thank you for not disowning me.’
It wasn’t until Bravissimo opened in Brighton that I found my ‘true size’, years later. Suddenly there were bras that not only correctly fitted but were pretty and sexy too. Up until that point the only ‘curvy’ models I had seen were ones that graced the pages of gentlemen’s magazines. The Bravissimo models were naturally well endowed and looked gorgeous – this was the turning point.
Various people had said to me I could ‘model’ underwear, which I laughed off for four particular reasons –
- I am 5’4, hardly an Amazonian goddess.
- I have zero experience.
- I am not size zero.
- I like cake too much.
And then I found out about Curvy Kate; the underwear was gorgeous and they used their customers as models. I chickened out the year before, far too concerned about ‘what people would think’ but then in 2011 I thought ‘Sod it!’’ (or words to that effect) and entered.
Coming second place was a huge confidence boost and I cannot recommend the brand or the competition enough. If you are on the fence, get off and get involved. Even though I didn’t win, I got the chance to model for their spring/summer catalogue and also filmed an online advert. As a result, Brighton Fashion Week asked if I would film and present their show with Driftwood Productions. I am now represented by ‘Base models’ (http://www.basemodels.co.uk/model/Emma%20Donaghy) which is exciting and I have some other lingerie based plans in the pipelines.
If none of that convinces you to enter then let me tell you the absolute best part about the competition. I apologize in advance for the cheese.
I am naturally a ‘people pleaser’; I care about what people think of me. I was about to put myself up for severe scrutiny. This was a big deal. I knew inevitably, I would receive derogatory comments.
But I was wrong.
I was overwhelmed by the support I received. Not only from my closest friends but from friends I hadn’t been able to see much since college and primary school. I don’t think I can thank the people who voted for me enough. Yes it can be hard work campaigning for votes but you will be surprised by how many people get behind you. Even if you are unlucky enough to receive one or two bad comments, I promise that for every bad, the positives outweigh them.
This competition is one of a kind.
It gives you the opportunity to promote a fantastic brand, a healthy body image, whilst meeting some gorgeous girls in the process. Don’t let your fears and insecurities stop you from having fun and taking risks. My biggest tip is to smile in your photos, have fun!
I can only imagine that ‘Curvy Kate’ will go from strength to strength. Not only have they just won ‘Fuller bust brand of the year’ but Star In A Bra is now in its second year in Australia and they are also about to take the US by storm, as well as launching Star In A Bra there this April.
It’s this that gives me hope that years from now, should I happen to have an adolescent girl of my own, she will have the benefit of growing up around companies like ‘Curvy Kate’, who encourage body confidence in all shapes and sizes and I’m happy in knowing I played a small part in that.”
So there you have it, another example of just what Star In A Bra can do for. Emma’s tale is a little different from George’s, but it’s just as inspirational.
As a brand that focuses on D+ ladies, we all know how traumatising a bad fitting can be, and how much of a terrible time our teenage (and beyond) years can be on the quest not only for good fitting lingerie, but body confidence. Emma can obviously relate to this and it’s so brilliant to see how’s she risen above this and gone to great things. Taking those first few photos can be absolutely terrifying but our past entrants just go to show that it’s worth it, and hey – if it takes a little coaxing with a glass of one (or two…) then so be it! And we loved that even though she didn’t win, Emma still got to take part in a Curvy Kate shoot.
Next up we’ll be talking to a certain someone who flew a long way to take part in a Curvy Kate shoot after winning Star In A Bra…any guesses who that might be?
Plus, if you want to see Emma joining in with what the Curvy Kate girls do best (cheese of course!), why not watch the video for the current Curvy Kate collection?
With the date announced, I’m sure many of you will have been pondering entering this year’s Star in a Bra competition. As I myself made it to the top 30 last year and have a lingerie blog with hundreds of bra reviews featuring Yours Truly, I thought maybe I’d give some pointers of how to take a better picture of yourself in your knickers.
4 of 5 of my submission pictures from last year
Curvy Star in a Bra finalist Nadine, 34G, flaunts her fabulous figure in a correct-fitting bra
We might be a little biased here, but here at Curvy Kate we believe that the right fit can make all the difference to how you look and feel. The right bra can take pounds and years off you, giving you back a waist that you’d forgotten you had. Defining your bust and waist is a sure-fire way to get attention, but more importantly will improve your health, posture, shape and confidence. If nothing more comes from your application, if it pushes you to get that professional fitting you’ve been putting off forever, you’ll thank us for it! If you’re currently wearing a C cup and are disappointed that you can’t enter, double check your size to be sure you’re not actually a D or above.
If you can’t make it to a fitters in time, why not check out our advice on the Very blog?
Wear a set which shows off your curves and work it!
This continues on for the ‘get fitted’ tip; the right size makes a huge difference to how you hold yourself and how you look on camera. Also, if you prefer a plunge bra for some enviable cleavage or if you feel best in a balconette, if you think you look cracking in a thong or if you prefer a retro high-waisted look, try show us some of your personality through your poses and your underwear to show yourself in the best light. Even better still, mix it up a bit and show us how versatile you can be!
We appreciate not everyone can afford a matching set, but co-ordinating your lingerie can really improve how you look overall. It shows that you’ve made an effort and helps you feel more glamorous. As far as I’m concerned, you wouldn’t wear mis-matching shoes to work, would you? Even teaming a black bra with some black knickers from a multipack would be a step in the right direction. You don’t have to make it a Curvy Kate set, but we like to see that not only are you drop dead gorgeous, but you have good taste too
Never underestimate the power of good lighting.
Need I say more?
Try and look like you’re having fun. See what a difference it makes! Once of the most gorgeous curves you have is your smile – we’d like to see them! It’s nice to see someone having fun and enjoying themselves in their pictures – look animated!
…But not too animated.
We’re looking for the next face and body of Curvy Kate, not the next top-shelf glamour model. We want to see how you really look in lingerie. By all means have fun, but nothing X-rated and there’s no need to try so hard – just relax, enjoy yourself and be you.
Know which angles show you off the best, but don’t forget to keep yourself looking natural.
Make a bit of effort
Why not have your girlfriends (or boyfriend?) over for a pamper session and make an evening out of taking your pictures? From past finalists we’ve found this can make all the difference with boosting confidence and calming nerves. Plus you can be each others’ cameramen/women, make-up, nail and hair artists. Put on a girly film with a glass of wine and really have fun with it. Maybe you could convince some of your fuller-figures mates to enter with you to help take the edge off.
…but there is a limit
As I said before, we want to see how amazing you really look. Whilst a little bit of make-up can enhance features and a little bit of lipstick never killed anyone, but we don’t want to see how you apply your slap with a paintball gun. Sure, for our Showgirl shoots we usually have a professional make-up artist with lashes, hair – the works – to help create a uber-chic theme, but we know each of our models are equally as stunning without a scrap of make-up on. Use make-up sparingly, but there’s nothing wrong with having one or two of your pictures a bit more glammed up.
Maybe if you’re going to have that glass of wine I suggested, drink it after you’ve done your face?
No sneaky photo editing
Everyone has lumps, bumps, scars, wrinkles and imperfections of all kinds – we want to see your natural look! It sounds cliché, but photo editing just distracts from your natural beauty. Poses can look awkward and mannequin-like, skin can have that tell-tale eerie glow and your eyes loose their sparkle. And we will know… if not from the photo alone, from meeting you in the flesh. So don’t do it!
If you’ve got problem areas and are scared by the idea of going Photoshop-free, don’t just crop things out. It’s natural to get folds of skin, cellulite, wobbly bits – celebrate your curves with pride!
How many of you have been wondering which shampoo I use – but not for the right reasons?
Choose your background wisely
Toilets are so distracting when it comes to entries. No matter how gorgeous a girl is if there’s a lavatory in the picture I can’t help but see that first. Any distracting background can be off-putting, so try find a plain wall to stand in front of for maximum focus on you. There has got to be a better option than the bird’s-eye view of your bathroom suite…
Don’t worry too much about photo quality
Kelly Parks and Lauren Colfer show how you could even be your own photographer – but is that a bathroom I spy, Lauren!?
We’re looking for the future face and body of Curvy Kate, not the next top photographer. We’re not particularly concerned about the quality of your photos, but it helps if they’re not grainy, blurry or too small. Most mobile phones are fitted with good cameras these days, and if you have a good digital camera, that helps too. Many digital cameras have lots of settings that help you take better photos – try them out.
Don’t be scared
Last year’s top 10 finalists Georgina Horne and Sophia Jenner rock in their entry photos
We have girls enter of all shapes and sizes, ages, heights, bra sizes and ethnicities. As far as we’re concerned there is absolutely no limits to entry – as long as you’ve over 18 and have natural boobs that fit into our lingerie, you’re in!
Hopefully some of these tips and tricks will help you, but if you need a little more persuasion, watch this space for interviews with past contestants, mini competitions and all of the latest Star in a Bra updates.
#1: Take at least five photos of yourself, which should include at least two head shots and three full-length body shots.
#2: We want to see photos of you in your favourite underwear set – which can be a bra set, a basque, corset/bra combination, bikini or swimming costume.
#3: Don’t include other people in the photos, as it’ll only confuse us as to who the competition entrant is.
#4: You must be a D cup or bigger,
#5: You must not have received any enhancements to your bust
#6: You must be aged 18 or over.
Full entry rules, terms and conditions to be announced here soon! Good luck to all!
The brand has always pride themselves on only using real women as models in their advertising campaigns and ‘so said, so done’ with the help of the Star in a Bra search. They scour the nation in search of a curvy women who are above a D cup and eludes confidence.
Their last model found through the UK Star in a Bra search 2011 is a perfect example of the brands ethos living through… size 14 Lizzie Haines from Uppingham has model for the brand in two seasons and has seen herself fronting advertising campaigns in magazines as well as exhibitions.
The competition took flight last year and ventured to Australia, continue the search for a model ‘down under’ to front the main UK campaign with Lizzie and pass models Laura and Lauren.
The competition is set to see a very exciting year with the growth in entries already forecasted to exceed last year’s with the grow in fans on the companies Facebook Page increasing their reach up to 400,000 friends of fans. Congrats Lizzie we could not have been prouder!
Curvy Kate has had a very interesting year with 400% growth in the last year alone. This big bra company boomed in sales as well as fans in the last year due to various trade shows, promotional activity and of course their unique designs for the D plus market.
Over the year they’ve seen new additions to the collection, new models through the Star in a Bra search, added a few well-known retailers and won an amazing award.
The Brand if know for celebrating curves and ‘real women’ and has taking this philsophy throughout the year starting with their annual ‘Star in a Bra’ competition where they scourer the whole of the UK and Ireland to find a Curvy Girl who was confident enough to flaunt her figure in lingerie. This is where they found their gorgeous model Lizzie Haines, a confident and very ambitious woman whose taken fly with the competition… after winning Star in a Bra 2011; Lizzie has go on to modelling for Curvy Kate for both the SS12 catalogue with runner up Emma Donaghy and the AW12 which was recently shoot in November with new Model Julia McLean.
Lizzie Haines will soon be taking part in a photoshoot with My Daily and participating in the February Trade Shows in Birmingham. She is also campaigning herself to win the ‘Plus Size Model of the Year’ award through 100percentpeople.com
Curvy Kate has also successfully launched the Star in a Bra competition in Australia this year! The competition proved to be just as popular as it is here in the UK; with Julia McLean being crowned the queen of curves to represent curvy girls down under. Julia was flown over to the UK to take part in the photo shoot for the AW12 catalogue and was dubbed ‘natural’ as she had no problem being in front the camera… Her photos were all amazing and is currently being used in the 12 days of Christmas campaign.
Along with these exciting images; we saw the launch of Curvy Kate’s new swimwear range, introducing the supportive yet stylist Rio Ruffle in Jade/Purple, Caribbean Curves in Purple Animal print and Bondi Breeze in Black/Pink. The swimwear was well received by all and will be available from next year (2012)… Although I cannot confirm where these will be I’m sure we will all be able to get our hands on them.
The range has also seen the Daily Boost and Fleurty added to the collections… These have already become favourites by many fans and retailers… The Daily Boost is Curvy Kate’s first design for a basic continuity range based on the best-seller Princess shape… It will be available in Nude and White for SS12 and black in the AW12 collection. The Fluerty was added to the showgirl range following the popularity of the Tease me and Thrill me collections… this was launched in sweet summer shades of powder blue and coral and would be available for SS12.
Throughout the year Curvy Kate has successfully marketed there way thought the recession making a name and a way for themselves… They were nominated for three awards in the UK lingerie awards and came our winning the ‘Fuller Bust brand of the Year’ award adding some more substance to the brand.
The fuller bust brand has seen success in every area increasing in fans to employees and gaining an impressive list of influential retailers all stocking their collections. Retailers added this year are online giants ASOS, Next, Debenhams, Very.co.uk, Simply Yours, Figleaves, Littlewoods, Fenwick (Brent Cross), Bravissimo (Various Locations) and Menarys.
Overall it’s been an eventful year for Curvy Kate and they are ending it with a ‘bang’ hosting the 12 days of Christmas campaign. I’m sure we have all seen the amazing Lizzie, Laura, Lauren and Julia singing the Christmas carol ’12 days of Christmas’ looking gorgeous as ever in the new AW12 collections. (See Below for the Video link)
There are amazing prizes up for grabs each day until the 12th December, anyone can enter through the Curvy Kate Facebook page by simply entering their name and e-mail address. There is a different prize to be won each day from top brands like Soap and Glory, the Perfume Shop, Simply Yours, Very.co.uk and Spabreak.co.uk to name a few…
100percentpeople are hosting their Plus size awards and our very own Lizzie Haines has been nominated.
So we need to call on the public for your support in voting for our Lizzie to not only be crowned Queen of Curves after she won this year’s Star in a Bra 2011 but to also be crowned Plus Size Model of the Year.
We all know from our Models that we like to promote a curvy, healthy figure and with that in mind I would like to touch on the subject of being curvy and being plus sized.
Curvy can come in all sizes from being a tiny size 8 to being a voluptuous size 18! It’s all about proportions and how your body is shaped… If you have an ‘hour-glass’ figure where your waist is the smaller than your hips and shoulders then you are considered to be ‘curvy’.
With that in mind the term Plus Sized means someone of size or someone above the average size… in the fashion industry anyone above a size 10-12 can easily be considered as ‘Plus Sized’. So as far as the term goes we have to consider that in the fashion/lingerie world our gorgeous curvy Lizzie can also be called a Plus Size model!
Although Lizzie is only a size 14, she still represents a far more realistic view of the average size… than many other Models in the fashion/lingerie industry. So we call on all our Curvy Kate fans to vote for Lizzie Haines as the next Plus Sized Model of the year! To vote please click on the link below!
Remember you can vote every 12 hours so remember to keep coming back to show your support! Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates!
I had an opportunity to go to MODA in Birmingham to see what Curvy Kate gets up to at trade shows and gain a wider understanding of the industry.
While there I also got to see you Star In A Bra Winner for 2011 – Lizze Haines, who know looks very much in her comfort zone and seems to be having a lot of fun.
It was hard grabbing her for a quick interview, so had to improvise and do it in-between her working and changing into different sets – here’s how we got on eventually…
So Lizzie how has it been since winning Star in a Bra 2011?
It has been amazing so far, can believe I’m actually here in my smalls modelling in front of people I don’t know. It’s a lot of fun though and was initially way out of my comfort zone when I started but after time it became easier to do. It hasn’t changed my life drastically, I still get to be me but just me with two days extra added to my diary!
I see your modelling the new Spring/Summer 2012 collection, what do you think? Any favourites?
I love them and I’m not just saying that because I work for the company (lol), but I think there’s something for everyone and the colours are amazing. I have two favourites which I would be asking for as soon as they arrive at Curvy Kate HQ and that’s the Daily Boost which fits amazing and look fantastic under my clothes, so happy your doing an everyday bra as well as fun/sexy/girlie styles. I also love Fleurty bra it’s looks so good on and it’s very flattering.
I can wait for them to come out myself, already got my eye on the delivery schedule! What about our new addition swimwear? Favourites?
Love love love them! I’m so happy to see nice swimwear that fits and is supportive! Will be making a list of all the ones I want… I have the most exciting lingerie drawer. My personal favourite is the Rio Ruffle, love the colour and the detailing on the back.
So what’s your favourite moment been since winning?
Again I have two favourite moments, the first one was definitely have my first ever Curvy Kate photo shoot with Emma, it was so good see here again and having her there made me less nervous because it was the first time for both of us. The other would be going to Paris for my first trade show, it’s was very tiring but a lot of fun.
How was your first photoshoot with Emma?
It was a lot of fun… a little different to the Star in a Bra photoshoot as we had to do some interesting poses lol but it was a really nice environment and got to meet the other SIAB models. The only thing I had to get accustom to was the enormous hair and the amount of make up I had to wear – obviously these were for print but it was a lot!
I love your the enormous hair look! So are you happy with the final result now that the catalogue is all printed and there’s no turning back?
I’m happy with the majority of them, there’s one in particular I do not like so much but that’s probably because i’m overly critical about myself as we all are.
How do you feel being a curvy model amongst all the other models at the trade shows?
It was a bit uncomfortable in Paris for my first ever MODA trade show because I didn’t feel part of the ‘model group’ as such so it took getting use to but now I’m more confident that ever and I doesn’t bother me as I’ve learn to embrace my body and I shouldn’t let that get to me because the whole point of the competition in the first place was to promote curvier models to the public.
It’s easier here at Birmingham because I’m across from Speedo Sculpture and they had models that were curvier than the norm so its great, I’m having fun!
I’m glad to hear your having fun, and it’s amazing what your doing because you should be proud of your body – you look amazing! So how do you feel flaunting your figure not online but in front of people now?
It was odd to begin with but had to come to terms that they are all professionals in the industry and they have come to see lingerie on a model and no one is scrutinising me.
Have you kept in contact with any of the girls in Star in a Bra top 10?
Yes I have made some amazing friend through this competition that I would keep for a lifetime plus more… I’m in close contact with most of them like Emma, Georgina and Sophia… and I talk to everyone else on Facebook… They are all so supportive!
So last question as you have to run and try another set… How is it working with the Curvy Kate team?
It’s amazing they are all really fun and they make me feel comfortable!
That’s really nice to hear… okay I will let you run off and get back to work but that’s for your time!

There’s only five days left before Star in a Bra starts in Australia… How exciting!
We understand it can be daunting entering a competition where you submit photos of yourselves in lingerie but remember we come in all shapes and sizes and we want you to celebrate your curves.
So I thought I would put together a little compilation of previous Star in Bra entrants and why they entered as a little encouragement… Enjoy!
Kelly Parks: I entered Star in a Bra because I’d often thought “I could do that” while looking through lingerie catalogues and thought this was a good opportunity for little old me to give it a whirl!
Georgina Horne: I am a big girl. Not just the boobs, but I have a huge bum and just everything! But my boyfriend loves my body and I have never felt the need to be slim, I’d be happier being a tad more toned but nothing drastic. I want to represent that idea to other bigger curvier ladies out there – big can be sexy and it can model underwear and it can have fun! Plus size girls need sexy bras too!
Hayley Cambridge: I entered to represent the women who aren’t very comfortable with or embarrassed about their big boobs, to show them that you can feel comfortable by wearing the correct sized bra and by realising that there are different solutions and styles to help you to love your boobs! I always used to be ashamed of my boobs because people would point them out and make comments about them, but I’ve grown to accept them since and I hope that this competition will teach me to love them. I’ll have to, if they win it for me!
Karen Simpson: I was very nervous and worried about entering, thinking that I wasn’t thin or young enough to be entering, but after reading your article it gave me confidence that this was not as important, but the person and personality that counted as well.
Emma Donaghy: I was an early developer and growing up, shopping for bras was a nightmare. I regularly attempted to squeeze my assets into the pretty petite sizes my peers were wearing. I wanted to ‘fit in’… literally. As I grew older, I learnt to be confident about standing out with my curves. Brands like Curvy Kate promote healthy figures in sexy lingerie, something I would love to be a part of.
Amanda Navin: To me this competition isn’t just about big boobed, curvy girls, it’s all about embracing your natural-shape in a healthy way whether you’re tall and slim, and you’ve got a bit too much boob or a bit too much bum. There’s always another girl who wants something you’ve got!
And to be quite frank, I’m sick to death of seeing all the same people in magazines and on the television, the ones that don’t even look real. British girls don’t look anything like the handful of girls that represent us – there’s a huge array of different shapes and sizes and I think that we should all enjoy being different, who wants to look exactly the same as everyone else anyway?! It’s boring!
It doesn’t matter who you are or what background you’re from, whether you’re Tall, Short, Tiny or voluptuous we want you to enter, have fun and love those gorgeous curves!
