Curvy Kate First Bloggers Event

With the release of our latest Autumn/Winter collections and third birthday milestone this month, we decided to celebrate by hosting our first ever exclusive blogger event.

With Curvy Kate’s infamous fit, fun and fashion as a focal point of the event, top British beauty, lifestyle, lingerie, fashion and plus sized fashion bloggers were invited to get a feel for our charisma and body confidence message.

With 80% of women are still wearing the wrong size bra, attendees were encouraged to get a bra fitting with one of our experts. The majority of the girls discovered that they were wearing the wrong size – with most needing smaller band sizes and at least one cup size larger – and were sent home with a gorgeous bra set in their brand new size.

To fully convey the brand’s passion for diversity and shapely figures, four of Curvy Kate’s ‘Star in a Bra’ models made an appearance, including this year’s winner Sophie Morgan (30G), runner up Charlotte Upton (28HH), last year’s winner Lizzie Haines (32H) and 32K 2012 finalist Alice Rose Rayman.

The bloggers were given a summary of the company’s inception and brand development by PR & Marketing Manager Hannah Houston, followed by an insight into the design process with Head Designer Charlotte Davies. The ‘Star in a Bra’ models then showcased how amazing their curvy figures looked in the latest collections in a fun catwalk display.

It was fantastic to have models of all different shapes and sizes there representing the brand, in particular we had great feedback about K cup Alice. It was fantastic to see such an interaction between the bloggers and the models since they all equally represent the Curvy Kate customer. It was wonderful to see so many of the bloggers enjoying the Autumn/Winter range and going home a little more knowledgeable of what Curvy Kate are all about. Full bust lingerie needn’t be something to hide; fashion is equally as important to us as the perfect fit.

Curvy Kate Third Birthday: Day 6, Slink Magazine

Got Curves? Bored of seeing models in fashion magazines that have none? Well, then SLiNK magazine may just be for you.

SLiNK magazine is a full-on fashion and lifestyle magazine whose tagline is “Styling Your Curves, Fashioning Your Life”. We don’t use the standard size 6 models like other magazines, instead we only shoot models from a size 14 and we never airbrush them any smaller. Not only do we shoot great curvy model editorials, we also make sure that all the clothes featured in the magazine go to at least a size 20/22. Finally fashion is a bit more inclusive!

Aside from gorgeous editorials shot by top photographers, we also have key trend shopping pages that show you how to buy into the latest catwalk looks, and unlike some of the major glossies we make sure we have products suitable to every purse.

When we aren’t obsessing about what colour is ‘in’, the SLiNK team search out the latest beauty goodies, while celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford takes care of our top tips and styles sections. In fact you can even watch some great hair care videos from Lee on our YouTube channel.

As the curvy girls’ ultimate lifestyle magazine, every issue of SLiNK is jam-packed full of articles on our issue theme (currently we are looking at managing your money!), as well as beautiful travel ideas, motoring features and our infamous food section. Headed up by Simon Henbery – the Head Chef at The Chelsea Brasserie, Sloane Square – each Issue he rustles up six incredible dishes for you to try at home. They’re healthy, creative and delicious!

For when you’re not at home reading SLiNK or browsing Curvy Kate collections, check out SLiNK magazine’s Culture guide, telling you where to GO, what to SEE, Do, Hear or Watch… we have it all covered.

SLiNK magazine was started in April 2011 purely as a digital magazine but as the readership grew, so did the demand for print and the magazine now offers both a digital download and a print edition retailing through its website.

SLiNK magazine was started as there is a real gap in the market for a magazine that embraces women for simply being them! You will NEVER find a quick fix diet guide in SLiNK magazine as we don’t believe happiness is dependent on weight. We encourage healthy eating and well-being rather than crash dieting.

We don’t go crazy for celebrities but do love to champion women who are changing the world and leading in their chosen fields.

SLiNK magazine is a magazine for women, to encourage, empower and inspire.

Does SLiNK sound like something you’d love to get involved with? Head over to their Facebook page for the latest news and updates from them, or better still, enter today’s Third Birthday Sweepstakes to be in the chance of winning one of five subscriptions to SLiNK magazine.

Curvy Kate Third Birthday: Day 5, Dove Hair Therapy

We’ve got that Friday feeling in the office, although to be honest this whole week has felt like one big Third Birthday party! We hope you’ve been enjoying our Third Birthday sweepstakes as much as we have – we’ve got our fingers crossed for you all win some amazing prizes!

Up today is Dove Hair Therapy.

Everyone has a hair ‘mare. Mine is – without a doubt – brittleness and breakage. I find that although my hair can get quite greasy at the roots, the ends are often left gasping for nourishment, and nothing can quite quench their thirst like an intensive conditioner.

When I have an ‘in-between-washes’ day, I find that my ends can feel so straw-like, and I wash my hair not only to keep it clean, but to put some moisture back into my ends. I’m trying to grow my hair and I love having long hair, but as my hair isn’t the most resilient, I need a little extra help.

That’s where Dove Hair comes in.

This week I picked up their ‘Intensive Repair’ regenerating mask, and I have to say I’m thoroughly impressed! My mum is a professional hairdresser so I’ve spent much of my life with access to trade price professional brands, but Dove’s mask can be picked up in your local supermarket or pharmacy, and certainly gives professional brands a run for their money.

I also picked up a travel-sized version of their ‘Nourishing Oil Care Express Treatment Conditioner’ for a recent holiday, and again, I’ve really enjoyed using it.

Both of the products I tried felt really nourishing on the hair, whilst still remaining light and soft. The fragrance wasn’t too strong or floral – the mask had a gorgeous scent which reminded me ever so slightly of almond or shea butter. It was a welcome change from heavily scented products which I find I love at first but get sick of pretty quickly.

When I was having a particularly Bad Hair Day and was in a rush to get out of the door, I have used a small amount of the Nourishing Oil Care directly to dry hair as a leave in treatment and it actually worked really well, too.

‘Advanced Care for Beautiful Hair’ – and a price tag to make you smile, too!

Curvy Kate Third Birthday: Day 3, Lady V London

Lady V London are an exciting new online retailer, selling stunning 50’s reproduction dresses from size 8 to 32.

Swing Dresses, Hepburn Dresses, Wiggle Dresses plus much much more!!

Lady Vintage dresses are the perfect option for curves, as swing dresses and a 50’s shape is so flattering. Create or emphasise hourglass proportions with a large, full skirt; that ‘swish’ effect is guaranteed to turn heads!

Wear with a petticoat for a full 50’s effect or alone for a more subtle yet girly look, and choose from a huge array of styles and print to really customise your look.

If you’re a fan of polka dots, florals animal prints, geometric, kitsch prints or something fruity, there’s something to suit every taste at Lady V London.

I myself have the Hawaiian Swing Dress (pictured above) and I find I can’t help but feel special in it. The bright, bold print is very attention grabbing, but it can even be dressed down with a cardigan and basic ballet pumps for every day. I’ve worn this dress on a night out, but I’d equally pop it on for a picnic in the park! It’s such a versatile item, plus Hawaiian prints are so on trend this season – and that’s not something I can usually boast.

The fit is great, it really nips in on the waist in a size 8, and my boobs fit in pretty comfortably.

Girls with a fuller chest than me (I’m a 30FF at the moment) such as Blogger Becky Mount (a 30G) and Kelly Parks (a 28GG) both have the Swing Dresses in a size 8 and still get on with this size well. 36J blogger Georgina Horne loves her Lady V midi dress and fits into it perfectyl. Yey for boob-friendly clothing!

Kelly Parks, from her Lady V blog review

About Lady V:

“‘Lady Vintage’ dresses are designed and manufactured by us, and we are the sole distributor. Many ‘Lady Vintage’ dresses are Limited Editions, which means that we cap the number of dresses we make (usually under 100) so that you can be assured that your dress is one of a kind and unlikely to be seen on anyone else at your special event. Our dresses are always made of the best quality fabric and to our very high standards, yet without the usual price tag. No other company in the UK offers such a variety of prints in such small quantities.

‘Lady Vintage’ dresses come in Sizes 8-22, with special ranges also made in Sizes 16-32.

Our customers play a very big part in our business. We have many loyal customers who regularly feature our dresses on their blogs. We take every bit of feedback very seriously, and are always here to listen to any ideas for new designs or improvements.

We have customers worldwide and offer affordable delivery to all countries as far away as Australia. We have worked very hard to get the cheapest and quickest delivery available. We currently offer express delivery services to many countries in Europe, plus Australia and the USA.”

And the US winner is… Krista Cousins!

The first ever USA Star in a Bra competition is now over, and it seems that our winner, Krista Cousins, is still taking it all in! We caught up with our winner to ask her all the questions that we all so desperately want answering… how does it feel to win Star in a Bra?

It feels like switching from black and white to color television for the first time, everything is brighter but also a bit unreal. It feels like riding a roller coaster as it takes its biggest dip- your heart lifts, the air swirls around you, your giggles cannot be suppressed but the pure thrill remains. But most of all it feels like hundreds of people patting you on the back and saying “we believe in you”

How did you find out about the competition and what made you decide to enter?

I’ve been in an online, women’s forum since I was sixteen, so about nine years and one of the members posted about the contest and asked if anyone was going to enter. I did the should-I or shouldn’t-I dance for awhile. I thought to myself, “me in lingerie?!” just last year I was shy to wear a bikini on the beach! I even almost gave up while my boyfriend took my pictures but he encouraged me to do it and well I did! I decided that it wouldn’t be even close to the worst thing that could happen and thus why not! It helped that I also took the time to research Curvy Kate and their philosophy which ensured me that this wasn’t just a beauty contest but about standing for something more.

If you go back to yourself whilst applying and told yourself you’d win, what would you have said?

I would have told myself “where’d you park the unicorn that you rode on in?” Seriously, I didn’t think I would win as the top ten was filled with beautiful, intelligent and well spoken women and everyone was such a good choice, how could you chose? To top it all off, I even had a dream the night before the winner was announced that one of the other girls won and it was so realistic that I woke up a little sad!

What gave you the inspiration to make your Youtube videos? Do you think they contributed to your win?

I was actually inspired by the other contestants who posted their videos to the Curvy Kate facebook page! They were short and also introduced us to them which I thought was a great idea because you can only get so much about a person from a photograph and a paragraph of text. However, I had to put my own spin on things, I’m a huge music fan and big on theatre and the like. Additionally, I felt like it would be to full of myself to just sit in front of the camera and ask people to vote for me without giving them something in return! So I decided to add some entertainment, show my silly side, do my own lyrics and mostly just be my real self to stand out and I think it worked. I didn’t realize the effect they had at first until some people told me they had watched the videos multiple times, when once I uploaded them; I didn’t really watch them again!

Tell us about the Star in a Bra shoot in New York – we want to hear ALL about it!

ALL about it? If I only had the time! Anyhoo- being that a live here I didn’t get to stay in the hotel like the other girls and bond with them which was a bit disappointing since they all seem like such nice people. It was funny because I was the last girl, on the last day so I was very nervous about what to expect. I could catch a cab like I had expected and was running low on time to get to the studio and had to speedwalk/half-run in 90 degree weather and I was thinking to myself “great, I’m the last one and I’m going to embarrass myself as a sweaty mess!” However, once I got there it was much more different than expected! Hannah and Laura introduced themselves to me right away and they were still so perky and excited to meet me. In fact, everyone I met was very nice and not what I was afraid of, wanting to get it over with since I was last.

Laura took command and hoisted me into a myriad of bras and chuckled that I had declared that I was a 36F. Then I was right away to makeup and hair! The makeup artist was very talented and managed to do a neutral look that still appeared stunning while the hair stylist did her best to give me a voluminous vixen look although my hair wouldn’t cooperate.

Finally, it was picture time! Once again everyone was so nice and took the time to give me tips which were helpful and no one was frustrated with me when I did stupid things like jump up and down , laugh or freeze up.  There were delicious cookies, chocolates and other treats lying around along with couches to lounge. I felt like I was on cloud nine and thus when it was time to part, I was pretty sad and lingering as we all said our goodbyes.

Would you want to do it again?

Definitely! The only thing I would change would be to keep my simple hair style to save the poor stylist’s arms and also introduce myself to the other girls earlier since I was a little shy and intimidated by them at first. Other than that, a million times yes as I later said to other who asked, it was one of the best days in my life.

Are you excited about coming to London?

I feel more in awe, actually! I’ve only been to a few other states, Canada and a few Caribbean islands but never to Europe or anything like that! Honestly, I had given up that I could ever visit Europe or travel like that for at least a decade due to the economy and such but now not only do I get to be photographed by professionals for an amazing brand with other amazing ladies but I get to visit an amazing city. Can you pinch me, Cheryl? Surely I’m dreaming!

Which Curvy Kate sets are your favourites?

This one is always such tough one! Entice is on the top of my list, it is a totally unique bra, I’ve never seen something so different, from the striped lines, to the delicate lace or even the little bow detail on the strap it’s stunning. After that I would have to say Tease Me as the runner up because in every color it is so beautiful and oozes sultriness while also maintaining magnificent detail.

Where do you get your bras fitted? Have you encountered bad experiences in the fitting room?

Intimacy! It’s the only commercial, chain store that I know of in the U.S that does a valid, encouraging fitting process they are always friendly and have never shamed me about my body. I have definitely had bad fitting experiences, the worst was when I went to a store that measured me and then promptly sent me out the door while half-heartedly suggesting I try looking online for “that size”.

What’s next for you?

Endless possibilities it seems. If all else goes as planned I shall be retiring from Nannying forever and beginning my master program in the fall as well. I’ll keep blogging as usual but really it is hard to ever know or plan what’s to come and so I try to be open to things which is why I’m here talking to you today!

What would you say to someone who’s a bit nervous about entering the Australian Star in a Bra that’s now on?

Don’t be nervous, ok go ahead and be a little nervous. I know it seems hard to put on underwear, take pictures AND post them on the internet, right? However, even just taking those pictures helps you learn a little about yourself, simply just entering the contest will give you a confidence boost, if I can do it, you can do it! I’ll never forget a comment I saw on the Curvy Kate USA page- a woman had just submitted her pictures and boasted with pride that she took the pictures after eating a large meal and did not feel embarrassed. That is what it’s all about. Although there can be only one representative, [forgiven my cheesiness] everyone is a winner. We aren’t competing against each other but rather competing against tired images of monotonous looking models, stores not carrying realistic lingerie and clothing sizes, and body shame. So I say go ahead and do it! You can be the next winner and even if you don’t, you’re a winner in my eyes because you had the guts try and that’s worth more than your weight in gold.

Congratulations, Krista! We can’t wait to meet you again for the Autumn/Winter 2012 photo shoot later this year! What a worthy winner and ambassador for Curvy Kate.

Vote for Curvy Kate for Best Lingerie Brand at the UK Lingerie Awards!

We can’t believe it’s that time again; the UK Lingerie Awards are upon us!

Last year, at the first ever Lingerie Insight awards show, we were lucky enough to win the ‘Fuller Bust Brand of the Year’ title, despite being up against some pretty stiff competition from much older, more established brands. Since we were only two years old at the time, we think that’s something to be proud of!

The show was a rather glitzy affair, with lingerie professionals, celebs and journalists all rubbing shoulders and sipping on bubbles. We had our own table and really made a staff event out of it. We weren’t really expecting to win, but we really saw it as an opportunity to celebrate what we’d achieved over the past few years. We did have our fingers and toes crossed, however, and when ‘Curvy Kate’ was announced over the incredibly tense crowd none of us could resist the urge to scream: ‘YES!’.

Whilst we don’t yet know if we’ll be in the running to get the same accolade again this year, we have been shortlisted for the ‘Best Lingerie Brand’. Arguably the ultimate jewel in the crown of the UK Lingerie Awards, we’re fit to bust (excuse the pun) about being nominated.

Whilst we’re not really accustomed to tooting our own horn, we think that we deserve this award since we are always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the lingerie industry. Never satisfied with doing something to death and keeping to the safe options, we’re constantly aiming to innovate and expand our ranges into all-new territories, with the ultimate aim of all cup sizes being happy and supported in their vast wealth of styles. Moulded t-shirt bra up to a J cup? No problem. Multiway plunge for big boobs? Nothing is too much of a hassle for our customers.

A vote for Curvy Kate is a vote for a company which celebrates its third year of business this year, and yet has achieved world-wide success and tens of thousands of fans strong on social media platforms. A brand which believes in celebrating – not alienating – its customers via their use of models which reflect the true essence of the brand: diversity, bra fit and body confidence.

This category is a ‘people’s choice’ award, and is selected by you, the customers, via a voting system. Since we know how loyal our fans are, if you do think we deserve this award we’d much appreciate if you’d get clicking and vote for Curvy Kate!

Help put some smiles on our face and vote for Curvy Kate :)

Star In A Bra Australia – words of wisdom from Lauren Colfer

We can’t quite believe that it’s already been a year since our first ever Australian Star In A Bra! Our first international venture with the competition, and since then we’ve run it in America and crowned our first American Star In A Bra…yet here we are again, on the look out for another stunning lady from the land down under!

Last years winner Julia has had a fantastic year and looks absolutely sensational in our Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, which you’ll start to see popping up in shops and on websites any day now. We’re sure you’ll agree she fits right in with the Curvy Kate family and whilst we’re so sad that her year is coming to an end, we’re really excited to see who will be our next Australian model…

So once again, we need your curves!

We know it’s a daunting prospect, so we caught up with some of our previous winners to help convince you to enter. To coax our American sisters into entering, we spoke to Laura Butler – from the first EVER Star In A Bra – and Lizzie Haines – our previous UK winner, and this time round we’re speaking to some other familiar faces.

First up, we hear from the lovely Lauren Colfer. Lauren won the second UK Star In A Bra competition, back in 2009, and she’s been with us ever since. Lets hear what she has to say about her Star In A  Bra experience…

“Hello everyone, I’m Lauren and I’m 22 years old and I live in South London! (That sounds like an intro for a TV Dating show.. Cringe!). At the moment, I work in a leisure centre in a variety of roles from administration to teaching swimming, but I’m currently on the hunt for a new career now, since graduating last year in Psychology, I feel it’s time for a change. If I’m not at the leisure centre, I might have a little modelling job here and there, most often for Curvy Kate!

I won the Star in a Bra competition back in 2009 and I can honestly say it is one of the best things that happened to me as it has opened so many doors for me. I remember sending my self-took photos quite late in the entry stage of the competition; I knew I wanted to enter that year after chickening out the previous year, but was finding it tricky to find a time to put a little make up on and get the poses going! When I got the call from Curvy Kate’s Hannah, I remember having to sit and have a moments silence with myself, before deciding that the only thing to do that made any sense would be to make a Facebook group! My friends and family were amazing and passed it on to people they knew and I found myself in the Top 10 photo shoot a few weeks later. When I won, I couldn’t believe it! There wasn’t much time to get used to the idea as the winner’s shoot and Curvy Kate’s first Spring/Summer brochure had to be shot the very next day! 3 years on and I have been lucky enough to continue to be a face of Curvy Kate in later brochures and travel to trade shows in Solihull, Birmingham, Paris, New York AND Las Vegas! I’ve even joined a modelling agency and done some different kinds of modelling work over the last year. Star in a Bra could definitely be your first step into the modelling world.

Modelling for Curvy Kate has been nothing but amazing. Having the chance to get your hair and makeup done to take glamorous photos is something a lot of girls dream of; being able to do that several times of year never gets dull. Travelling abroad for trade shows has been great; after a long day working at the show, we go for amazing dinners and drinks, stay in lovely hotels and get to have a bit of sight-seeing and shopping time! This year looks set to be a good one too, what with the competitions in the US and Australia, Curvy Kate just keeps getting better! Being a Curvy Kate girl is like a gift that keeps on giving; you get to meet some lovely people, from the other models to the Curvy Kate team behind-the-scenes, and you get to keep some bras and knickers every now and then; what more could you ask for!

My absolute favourite Curvy Kate Set is the Tease Me Bra from the ShowGirl range; the shape and lift it gives is unbelievable. I have it in 3 colours and honestly, I don’t think that’s anywhere near enough! I am excited for the release of the new Smoothie and Gia bras, as wearing them on shoots and tradeshows has made me fall in love!

Honestly, working for Curvy Kate has been nothing but high points. The only low points that come to mind were in the very beginning when I came across a small handful of horrible comments about me after winning the competition, from women AND men! But a quick chat with my mum reminded me that this is the industry it is, and with great success comes jealousy from other people. So my advice to all you ladies who want to enter, bear in mind that there are people out there who might like to be horrible just to try and get a reaction. Any bad comment you might come across will be outweighed by a hundred positive comments from the people you DO want to listen to!

I say any girl who has the assets to fill a Curvy Kate bra needs to grab a camera and get entering because you have nothing to lose (but your clothes for a couple of hours) and everything to gain! Make sure you get everyone and anyone you know involved in voting for you, and if you can, contact your local newspapers and radio stations, student unions.. whatever you can!

Before Curvy Kate, I never used to smile properly in photos, now, I have the biggest cheesiest grin of them all. Curvy Kate has made my confidence in myself and my body soar. I used to envy skinny girls, but I have come to love my body for every curve it has; I am a woman after all, not a girl!”

Has the gorgeous Lauren convinced you to enter? We hope so!

To find out more about the competition, the brand and hopefully to enter, head on over to the Curvy Kate Australia Facebook page and have a look around.

Or maybe she’s done such a great job you want to get straight on entering? Brilliant! If that’s the case, put that camera on charge and head straight to our Star In A Bra application on Facebook – the only way to enter. But don’t worry, your pictures won’t be public just yet! It’ll tell you everything you need to know about the competition but feel free to leave us a comment if you have a query and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Good luck to everyone entering, and to everyone who’s thinking of entering…what are you waiting for?!
